CHICAGO — Chris Chelios could be back on the ice Monday, skating with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League.
The 47-year-old defenseman, a Chicago native, was not re-signed by the Detroit Red Wings after last season. A Wolves spokeswoman said Thursday that Chelios had not signed and there would be no developments until the team returns from a trip to Canada.
Chelios was limited to 28 games during the 2008-09 regular season because of a broken leg. He played in six games during the playoffs.
• The Red Wings signed former Avalanche forward Brad May to a one-year contract. May, 37, has 127 career regular-season goals and 160 assists.
• Sharks forward Brad Staubitz has been suspended for one game for his hit Tuesday on Davis Drewiske of the Kings. Staubitz will lose $2,590 in salary.
Meissner slowed by knee injury
COLORADO SPRINGS — Former world and U.S. champion figure skater Kimmie Meissner has withdrawn from her two Grand Prix events because of knee problems.
The 2006 world gold medalist and 2007 U.S. champ has been bothered by tendinitis in her right knee after suffering a dislocated kneecap. She dropped out of the Cup of Russia and the NHK Trophy skating competitions.
That almost certainly will keep Meissner off the U.S. team for the Vancouver Olympics.
“After much thought and consideration for what is best for the U.S. team and my career, it is with great regret that I have decided that I must withdraw from my assigned Grand Prix events,” Meissner said. “For the United States to be represented properly, especially in an Olympic year, I feel I must put my personal desire to compete aside.”
Jordan pondering return to Illini
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Four months after he hung up his Air Jordans at Illinois, guard Jeff Jordan is talking to coaches about coming back.
Michael Jordan‘s oldest son left the team in June after playing for two seasons. He said then that he wanted to focus on school.
Illinois spokesman Derrick Burson said Jeff Jordan recently met with assistant coaches about a possible return.
• Indiana sophomore Lindsay Enterline will miss the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee during preseason conditioning.
