Craig Ferguson has been called America’s most unlikely late-night TV talk show hostand as a crazy, hard-to-understand Scot, he may be. But he’s my favorite. And he’s in Denver tonight for the sold-out Girls Night Out dinner for Girl’s Inc.
So what’s he going to do for a room filled with about 900 dames — and a few guys like me?
“I’m kind of scared, to tell you the truth,” he said on the horn Thursday. “I’ve never done anything like this before, play to a predominantly female crowd. I hope I don’t disappoint them. I have disappointed some women in the past.”
Who hasn’t?
Local comedian/vet Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald is a friend of Ferguson’s who’ll warm up the crowd. And Ferguson likes the idea of some male reinforcements in case things get ugly.
Ferguson says his stand-up routine is much like his nightly monologue on “The Late Late Show.” But he’s been on the road promoting his best- selling book (“American On Purpose”), so he just hopes he remembers the jokes.
“I just keep talking until I’m through talking and I just hope some of it is funny,” he says.
We got smarts.
A front-page story in the Denver Daily News on Wednesday took note that the “Mile High City ranked fifth smartest in U.S.”
I’d feel proud — except for the headline that read “Denver — a city full of brianiacs?”
Connection.
As it is with so many scandals, Colorado has a connection to the David Letterman dust-up.
Accused blackmailer Robert “Joe” Halderman sent an e-blast to friends in March — saying that his son Jimmy and his ex-wife were moving to Fort Collins in June. And they did. “She says she chose Fort Collins for several reasons: It is relatively close to her two older sons now living in Vail, the cost of living is significantly lower than in Fairfield County . . .”
Also, Halderman’s dad, Jim Halderman, lives just outside Denver.
Mom plus one.
It’s a mothers and daughters fashion show at Saks on Thursday with cocktails and “retail therapy” to benefit Denver Health Foundation. On the runway: Marilyn, Christi and Ashley Coors; Aimee and Caroline Caplis; Michelle and Sophia Sie; Bertha and Maria Lynn; Piper, Cydney, Ciara and Cenaiya Billups.
City spirit.
