DURANGO, Colo.—The longtime editor and chairwoman of The Durango Herald has died, the newspaper said.
Morley Cowles Ballantine died Saturday of respiratory failure at age 84. She and her late husband, Arthur Ballantine Jr., formed The Durango Herald more than 50 years ago after buying and merging two smaller newspapers.
Eventually the family-owned publishing company grew to include the Cortez Journal newspaper and two weeklies, The Mancos Times and the Dolores Star.
In 1968, Ballantine became the first female chairman of the Colorado Associated Press Association. One of her sons, Richard Gale Ballantine, is currently publisher of The Durango Herald.
