It’s never too early to plan, and the Friends of Berthoud Pass group will continue its low-cost, high-quality avalanche awareness courses for the 2009-10 season.

Bob Tomsky, a former Berthoud Pass Ski Patrol avalanche training director, will provide backcountry travelers with a 2 1/2-hour classroom overview of avalanche awareness, avoidance, rescue and forecasting methods and skills.

There is classroom training scheduled across the state starting at the end of October and running through the winter. It will culminate with full-day, on-snow sessions at Berthoud Pass in February. The courses are open to the public with a $5 minimum donation.

Details: See dates for classes in the outdoor calendar, page 7C. For more info, contact Friends of Berthoud Pass at fobp_info@yahoo.com or go to .
