U.S. marshals in Cleveland arrested a convicted sex offender accused of luring men to his Boulder apartment with promises of jobs and then molesting them.

Allegations that David McCoy, 56, was preying on young men came to the attention of Boulder police in August.

A 26-year-old man told police that he flew to Colorado from New Jersey to meet McCoy, who had promised him a job in television. McCoy allegedly lured him to his apartment and told him that he had to “participate in a number of trust-building exercises.”

The exercises included inappropriate touching during physical examinations in the nude and McCoy watching him shower.

McCoy was convicted of sex offenses in Ohio in 1978, but laws at the time did not require him to register as a sexual offender.

“A search of David McCoy’s criminal history included rape by force, kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon, threats, … corruption of a minor,” according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

McCoy told the victim he was a physician and a psychologist and that everything he did had a reason, according to the affidavit.

McCoy is listed as a suspect in a similar complaint filed with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department, according to the affidavit. “The contents of the report are similar: McCoy convincing the victim that he went to Harvard and he ‘studied people,’ the massages, sleeping in the same bed. During the night, the victim thought he saw red flashing lights, and he believed he was being photographed,” according to the affidavit.

Boulder police worked with the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Location and Apprehension Group in Denver to apprehend McCoy. He was arrested by marshals and the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.

McCoy will be extradited and brought back to Boulder for prosecution.
