COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The girl who raised the animal that was named the grand champion steer at the El Paso County Fair is still waiting for her money while officials resolve whether there was any cheating.

The Gazette reports that an observer at the fairgrounds this summer had wondered if the steer’s shape was enhanced by air injected under its skin. The procedure known as “airing” is considered cheating in the 4-H world.

Sue Crozier of the county fair board says fair officials are waiting for a final report from the state veterinarian before the steer’s owner is paid. The steer sold for $5,900 at auction.

The steer’s owner and her mother have declined to talk publicly about the case.
