State Radio seems an unlikely band to play Colorado Springs, but they obliged their fans — and then some — at the Black Sheep on Wednesday. Photos by Denise Chambers.
“Thank you for coming here!” That phrase rang out several times from a woman in the audience at on Wednesday night. (That, and “washboard, washboard, washboard.”) The first chant was a note of gratitude to for making a stop in Colorado Springs on their “Let It Go” tour. Even I was a little surprised (and thrilled) that they stopped in our fairly conservative city given their activism.
Fortunately, the band did not disappoint, and the majority of the night was a full-on sing-along. Midway through the set came “Democracy in Kind,” and considering the decibel level of the crowd behind me, the place felt absolutely packed. I turned around to take a quick peek and found the venue was only about half full. You would have never known it from State Radio’s performance — or the energy of the crowd.
As for the “washboard” chanting, that was an homage to Bonnie Paine of , the openers. During their opening set she rocked the washboard for the first few songs then switched to the djimbe. I’m pretty sure the audience fell as much in love with this band as I did, at least based on their chanting. Every member of the band got a shout out from the crowd at some point. — Denise Chambers
