Winter weather began to move into Denver and much of the southern Front Range and eastern Colorado late Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Denver issued a winter-weather advisory for snow that extends until 6 p.m. today.

In Denver and other Front Range cities, snow accumulations are expected to be light and mainly on grassy areas because the ground is fairly warm.

However, to the west, south and east of Denver, forecasters warn that snow will accumulate.

In these areas — extending in a U from Georgetown, southeast to Castle Rock then northeast toward Deer Trail, Limon and Akron — rain was expected to change to snow around midnight and may become heavy early this morning.

Total snowfall amounts of 3 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts on some slopes, are expected by this afternoon.

The areas of the heavier snow include Jefferson and west Douglas counties above 6,000 feet.
