WASHINGTON—A Colorado artist has won a national portraiture competition and will have his work shown at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

The museum announced Thursday that 37-year-old Dave Woody of Fort Collins, Colo., will win the $25,000 prize and a separate commission. His photograph titled “Laura,” portraying a fellow graduate student, was among 49 finalists.

The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition drew 3,300 entries.

Second prize was awarded to Stanley Rayfield of Richmond, Va., for his painting titled “Dad.” Third place went to Adam Vinson of Jenkintown, Pa., for a painting titled “Dressy Bessy Takes a Nap.”

An exhibit of the finalists opens Friday.

One notable entry depicts retired Army Sgt. Richard Yarosh, who was severely burned in Iraq.
