The foothills saw up to eight inches this evening, as mountain traffic on Interstate 70 slowed to a crawl as night-time temperatures turned drizzle to flakes, according to the National Weather Service.
Moisture moved east before 9 p.m. but temperatures are expected to linger near freezing overnight.
After a forecast high of about 52 in Denver on Monday, a big winter storm is waiting in the wings, forecasters warned.
A “strong and cold storm system: will move into western Colorado Tuesday night, brining widespread snow showers and cold to the state on Wednesday,” according to the forecast.
Accumulations could be significant, including the first storm for the metro region. The high in Denver on Wednesday is expected to be just 31 degrees with an 80 percent chance of snow, forecasters said Sunday evening.
Snow chances for the metro region linger into Thursday, with a nigh of about 34 degrees and a low of 22.
Daily highs in the metro region could remain 40s through the weekend, according to the Weather Service.
