AURORA — The City Council gave final approval Monday to a 2010 budget that calls for deep cuts in library services.
The operating budget of $231 million is about $14 million less than the 2009 budget.
The council agreed to cut about 135 positions for 2010, with about 50 of those positions now filled. The rest were vacant.
About 40 people who work at libraries will be laid off, and four of the seven libraries will be closed unless voters OK a property-tax hike next week.
Police and fire departments were spared any big cuts.
The cuts come as the city has seen a decrease in sales-tax revenue as well as new housing construction.
