KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The man accused of being the ringleader of a carjacking that turned into the rapes and murders of a Tennessee couple was convicted Wednesday on nearly all counts. Lemaricus Davidson, 28, now faces the possibility of the death penalty.
Christopher Newsom, 23, and his girlfriend Channon Christian, 21, died in the January 2007 attack. The killings became a racially charged case: The victims were white and middle- class, the defendants black and poor. Authorities said race didn’t appear to be a factor.
