FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A jury in Fort Collins has convicted a man of second-degree murder in his girlfriend’s death.
Thirty-year-old Justin Levi Moore was convicted Tuesday in the shooting of Valerie Gendernalik last year. He faces 16 to 48 years in prison. A sentencing date has yet to be set. Moore could face tougher sentencing standards if he is labeled a habitual criminal, which depends on the outcome of pending drug charges and a weapons charge.
Moore’s attorney had argued Gendernalik’s death was an accident as the drunken couple played with a gun that they thought was unloaded.
Gendernalik’s parents, Larisa and Larry Gendernalik of Colorado Springs, brought their daughter’s ashes with them to court every day during Moore’s trial.
