The Silverton School will go forth with nearly $11.9 million in its pocket to “thoroughly rehabilitate” the 1911 building after voters Tuesday approved a tax increase worth $1.2 million, Superintendent Kim White said.
“We’ll have a new heating system, updated electrical system, handicap accessibility, a modern fire-safety system equipped with sprinklers and automatic 911 caller,” White said. The K-12 school also will renovate classrooms to support computer use and update the science lab, which violates safety codes.
Silverton received a $9.5 million grant from the Building Excellent Schools Today — or BEST — program earlier this year, but to get the money, it needed to raise $2.4 million in matching funds.
The town accomplished that with the help of other grants, district funding and the tax hike approved Tuesday. The project will take about a year, White said.
