STILLWATER, Okla. — Patrick Lavine scored on a 21-yard interception return and No. 17 Oklahoma State came up with a final defensive stand to keep its slim hopes for a Big 12 championship alive with a 24-17 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday night.
After allowing some rare pressure against quarterback Zac Robinson in the first half, the Cowboys relied on their Big 12-leading rushing attack to drain the clock in the second half. Oklahoma State piled up 207 yards on the ground after halftime and controlled the ball for 22 minutes.
Texas Tech got one last chance after Robinson fumbled with 98 seconds left on a play that left both him and defender Jamar Wall shaken up.
Tramain Swindall dropped Taylor Potts’ fourth-down pass to doom the final drive by the Red Raiders.
The loss denied coach Mike Leach his 83rd win at Texas Tech, which would have pushed him past Spike Dykes for the most in school history.
Robinson finished with 99 yards rushing and 90 yards passing for the Cowboys.
Keith Toston had 76 yards and Kendall Hunter added 68 as the Cowboys closed with 243 yards on the ground.
No. 2 Texas 42, Baylor 7
WACO, Texas — Colt McCoy tied the NCAA record for career victories by a starting quarterback and Texas reached 10 wins for the ninth straight season, second only to Florida State’s run of 14 consecutive 10-win seasons from 1987-2000.
McCoy is 42-7 in his career, tying the wins record set by former Georgia quarterback David Greene.
Texas led 40-0 by halftime with McCoy throwing touchdown passes of 3 and 7 yards to Jordan Shipley. Cody Johnson ran for 109 yards and two short touchdowns and Tre’ Newton added a 45-yard scoring run as Baylor absorbed its fifth loss in six games.
“I didn’t want to go out this way,” said Baylor senior safety Jordan Lake, who played his last home game. Oklahoma 65, Texas A&M 10
NORMAN, Okla. — A week after throwing five interceptions, Landry Jones passed for a career-high 392 yards and five touchdowns — two to DeMarco Murray — as Oklahoma became eligible for a bowl.
Murray rushed 18 times for 80 yards and had five catches for 143 yards for Oklahoma, which put the game away in the first half by taking advantage of three lost fumbles by Texas A&M, two of those on kick returns.
Jones completed 24-of-39 passes as Oklahoma rolled up season highs in total offense (640 yards) and points.
Missouri 38, Kansas State 12
MANHATTAN, Kan. — Danario Alexander caught 10 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns in his second monster game in as many weeks and Missouri put a big dent in the Wildcats’ title hopes in the Big 12 North.
In his last two games, Alexander has 414 yards in receptions. He hooked up with Blaine Gabbert on scoring plays of 54, 16 and 80 yards.
Gabbert was 20-of-27 for 298 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers, who had lost four of five and dropped out of contention for their third straight North Division championship.
Kansas State slipped a half-game behind Nebraska in the North Division race. The Huskers host the Wildcats next Saturday in the division’s decisive showdown.
