Mike Keefe, The Denver Post’s longtime cartoonist, has been awarded the prestigious 2009 Berryman Award for Editorial Cartooning from the National Press Foundation.
Judges honored Keefe for a wide-ranging series of cartoons published in the past year that poked fun at politicians, journalists and public perceptions. He will be honored in February at a dinner in Washington, D.C.
“Mike’s cartoons have been a daily treat for Post readers for 34 years,” said Post editorial page editor Dan Haley. “This national honor is richly deserved.”
Past winners of the award include Nate Beeler, Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Breen, Steve Sack and Jimmy Margulies.
“Serious global concerns, huge domestic issues, great political divides — it’s been a rich environment for editorial cartooning,” Keefe said.
Keefe, 63, was a Marine, math teacher and doctoral student before he stumbled on a career in cartooning. The Post hired Keefe in 1975 to replace retiring cartoonist Pat Oliphant. He is nationally syndicated in more than 850 newspapers and websites.
