A 14-year-old girl died Friday in a skiing accident at Breckenridge.

Haley Rose Gans, 14, was from Colorado Springs and home-schooled, the coroner’s office said.

The incident happened about 11:45 a.m. on a blue intermediate trail, according to a media release from Vail Resorts, the owner of Breckenridge.

The mountain’s Ski Patrol and members of Flight for Life responded, and the girl was rushed to Breckenridge Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

She was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The coroner said witnesses reported Gans was skiing fast and hit a tree. Initial indications are that her death was related to “blunt force trauma of the chest.”

This is the first reported Colorado ski death this season.
