LONGMONT, Colo.—Thousands are expected at a Longmont farm Saturday to dig for leftover crops.
Miller Farms plans to open its gates for a second consecutive year of gleaning, an ancient practice of foraging fields for unharvested crops.
The farm says 40,000 people showed up last year, and gleaners took home 600,000 pounds of food. The farm says hail storms damaged much of this year’s crop, but that there are still carrots, Brussels sprouts and some other vegetables available. Organizers say the gleaning event is meant to help people in need by giving them unharvested crops that would otherwise rot.
The farm asks gleaners to bring their own shovels. Pre-picked produce is available for sale.
