ALBUQUERQUE — Maybe it was inevitable that the two worst teams in the Mountain West settled the basement battle with one of the most entertaining games of the season.

In a game that saw five lead changes, Colorado State couldn’t find a way to defeat winless New Mexico and its two-season, 14-game losing streak. The Lobos pulled out a 29-27 decision with 12 seconds left on a 27-yard James Aho field goal.

It was CSU’s eighth straight loss, the longest single season losing streak since the 0-12 disaster in 1981.

The Rams were moving to extend a 27-26 lead when John Mosure fumbled on the UNM 5-yard line. Donovan Porterie easily moved the Lobos to the other end of the field before James Morehead dumped him for a 9-yard loss to the Rams 36 on third down.

New Mexico punted with 3:06 left. The Rams punted with 1:32 remaining and the Lobos were only 45 yards from the end zone.

On fourth-and-3 with 1:08 left on the CSU 38, Porterie took off to his right for the first down to the 33. New Mexico was out of timeouts. Kasey Carrier used a second effort to escape to the 11.

The Lobos lined up for Aho’s 27-yard attempt and it split the uprights with 12 seconds left. Aho hit the uprights three times a week ago.
