WILEY, Colo.—A southeast Colorado grain elevator company has been fined more than $1.6 million for alleged violations of safety rules and child labor laws after the death of a 17-year-old worker.

Federal officials say the teen suffocated in an elevator owned Tempel Grain LLC. The company identified the victim as Cody Rigsby.

Tempel spokeswoman Kelly Spitzer said Monday the company is reviewing the citations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says alleged safety violations include a lack of rescue equipment, inadequate training and failing to turn equipment off when workers were inside bins.

The Labor Department says it found labor violations involving minors as young as 13. The alleged violations include underage workers and teens working prohibited jobs or hours.
