FORT CARSON, Colo.—A Fort Carson soldier from Illinois has died after an attack in Afghanistan.
The Defense Department said Tuesday that 22-year-old Spc. Jason A. McLeod of Crystal Lake died Monday west of Pashmul of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with mortar fire.
Family members say McLeod was deployed to Afghanistan in May and was due to come home on leave in less than a month. They say he was a mechanic who worked on Humvees.
He also served in Iraq in 2007 for about a year. He was a 2006 graduate of Crystal Lake Central High School.
He’s survived by his wife, Aimee Ghannam, 15-month-old daughter Jocelyn, parents and two siblings.
He was assigned to the 704th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson in Colorado.
Thirty-two other soldiers from the Army post have been killed in Afghanistan and 255 have been killed in Iraq.
