It’s finally here. That holly-jolly time of year that feels like a month-long party. There’s the office holiday party. Next is the boyfriend’s work party. A friend is having an “ugly Christmas sweater” party. Maybe someone else wants to have a Secret Santa gift exchange, or perhaps a Hanukkah celebration is in the works.
By New Year’s Eve, partying has almost become a way of life. On New Year’s Day the hangover truly begins, so it’s time to make the most of the weeks ahead.
Turkey Day may have been brutal, but friends and family are in town. Many are looking to start the holidays right, so put on some loose-fitting clothing and roll off the couch. Employ wheelbarrows if necessary.
Today, amble over to Tambien (250 Steele St.). It’s “The Lighting of Tambien,” the restaurant’s excuse to get everyone “lit” in the spirit of the holidays.
Happy hour runs from noon to 7 p.m., with house margaritas on special. Tambien’s Mexican menu will be a welcome break from the nonstop turkey feast, too — no cold turkey sandwiches here.
Tonight will be rockin’, too. At Bar Standard (1037 Broadway), it’s “Disko N’Ferno” night, a ’70s and ’80s retro night. DJ Danny Martinez will spin dance hits of yesteryear upstairs while the Denver House Authority takes over downstairs. Maybe Mom will want to come, too.
Across town at Suite Two Hundred (1427 Larimer St.), DJ Skribble will be manning the decks for a special post-Thanksgiving blowout.
He’s familiar to longtime MTV watchers as the DJ on shows like “The Grind” and the Spring Break marathons. He’s been doing his thing for almost 30 years, with hip-hop as his stock in trade. Expect high energy when he visits the Suite tonight.
Also in LoDo tonight is Tommie Sunshine, at Beta (1909 Blake St.). He’s making another trip to the Mile High, bringing along his signature mix of live performance and mad DJ skills.
Sunshine is a renowned remixer, too, adding new life to tracks by acts as diverse as Elvis Presley and Da Brat. Plus, the man looks like a hipster Jesus, flowing locks, peaceful beard and all. Who coud resist? Advance tickets to tonight’s show are $10 at groovetickets.
On Saturday, Vinyl (1082 Broadway) hosts legendary British DJ Dave Seaman. A veteran of the United Kingdom’s house scene, Seaman is a man of many talents: He’s hosted shows for the BBC, edited Mixmag magazine and run record labels.
He’s no slouch behind the turntables, either, with three Global Underground mix CDs to his credit. He’s also handled remixing duties for the likes of Kylie Minogue, U2, David Bowie and New Order.
Tickets for his Vinyl gig are $10 in advance or $15 the day of the show. Buy tickets at .
With all the dance music going on this weekend, there’s no excuse for staying home and sinking into the couch. Rally the troops and get moving.
One more.
Just when the Thanksgiving revelry dies down, Beta brings in another club-packing DJ.
House DJ David Guetta embraces his pop leanings. He collaborated with the Black Eyed Peas on their summer hit “I Gotta Feeling,” and contributed remixes, too. His song with British singer and Kanye West collaborator Estelle, “One Love,” was sitting pretty on ‘s top-20 progressive house chart at press time. This is a guy who likes to have fun, and people like him for it.
Guetta brings his sunny sensibilities to Beta on Thursday. Advance tickets are $35 at .
