Colorado’s winter high schoolers have next.
On Tuesday, Season No. 2 in 2009-10 will open for boys and girls basketball, ice hockey, girls swimming, boys and girls skiing and wrestling.
As usual, there is overlap with the football playoffs — four classifications will decide championships on Saturday — as well as a mandatory statewide shutdown over the holidays.
An assortment of tournaments and nonleague contests will dominate early play, to be followed by a late-winter rush, beginning with girls’ state meets in swimming Feb. 12-13 in Fort Collins and Loveland.
Additional highlights pop up at the Colorado wrestling tournament at the Pepsi Center (Feb. 18-19), the largest spectacle of the school year, and the state basketball tournament at multiple sites, including the Coors Events Center in Boulder for the two upper classes (March 12-13).
The kids of spring won’t wait for the end of winter. Colorado’s third season will open on March 4, or 10 days before basketball crowns all champions.
