Far be it for us to advocate reliance on technology over training and good judgment, but every bit helps when it comes to avalanche assessment and avoidance. That’s why Swiss-based mountaineering company Mammut has introduced its own iPhone App with the aim of helping backcountry enthusiasts in assessing risks. The free Mammut Safety App features an inclinometer to estimate slope angles, a compass to determine the slope exposure and an altimeter. It also includes links to avalanche bulletins worldwide, provided you’re in range. Just bear in mind the ongoing debate on cellphone interference with avalanche beacons.
