It would be easy to dismiss Scarpa’s new boots built from plant-based oil, rather than petroleum, as vegan versions of their former selves. Instead, it turns out the eco-friendly new plastic in the T2 Eco telemark boots (MSRP: $580, pictured left) and Tornado Eco alpine touring boots (MSRP: $680, right) is actually beefier than previous editions. Scarpa’s 90 percent castor oil-based plastic called Pebax Rnew retains its stiffness over a slightly wider temperature range than the company’s traditional plastic, while using a third less fossil fuel to create, or so the manufacturer claims. A design overhaul introducing triple- injection molding to men’s and women’s models of the T2 makes them significantly stiffer. The redesign also adds a flat sole to enhance turn initiation, along with a new Intuition Performance Tour liner.
