Denver’s fourth-generation native rocker Jill Sobule slipped in and out of town last weekstopping only to sing a duet with her mom, Elaine Dillon, and bring down the house at the Walnut Room.
Sobule was a staple in the local music scene before she left for L.A. in the ’80s. She’s always had her fans and is best known for her 1995 hit single “I Kissed a Girl” — many years before Katy Perry’s 2008 hit with the same title.
Sobule’s touring to promote her Internet-funded album, “California Years.” Stopping in Denver is always good — and it gives her a chance to jam with Mom. Yes, the 76-year-old mama joins Sobule on stage for a song or two. This last visit she was on stage for the song “Big Shoes,” about her mom making her wear orthopedic kicks when she was a kid in Denver. Her mom wrote and sang a rap rebuttal.
“And she also does a wicked cover of Nelly’s ‘It’s Getting Hot in Herre,’ ” Sobule adds.
Sobule is a St. Mary’s grad — so a bunch of old school chums stashed their circle pins and caught the act at the Walnut.

Wall Street Journal traveling food writer Raymond Sokolov sent Boulder a love letter Saturday — praising its vibrant restaurant scene. “A new aroma now fills the downtown Pearl Street pedestrian mall, and it comes from truffles and saffron, not cannabis.”
He pokes some fun at The Kitchen’s political correctness, noting that the restaurant brags that its used cooking oils power a staffer’s car. But he loves the squash farro so much, he writes, “If the man who thought this up fueled his Bentley with the rendered fat of endangered songbirds, we would still line up to eat his food.”
