Nothing says winter quite like beer and Barenaked Ladies in Vail. And the organizers of Vail’s Snow Daze season kickoff party are hoping the combination sets the tone for a week of winter-flavored fun that lasts all season.

Before you drop your swim trunks and dive into the hot tub, keep in mind that these Barenaked Ladies are actually the headlining band at Saturday’s free concert at Ford Park — one of three music acts scheduled throughout the weekend. Friday night features Yukon Kornelius (of Warren Miller movie fame) at Dobson Arena in Vail, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band rock the Checkpoint Charlie outdoor venue with another free show Sunday at 3 p.m.

The on-snow action kicks off on Golden Peak with the hilarious Dummy Demolition Derby at 5 p.m. on Thursday ($5,000 to the winner, entry is still open) and two full days of free equipment demos at the gear expo at Eagle’s Nest atop the Lionshead gondola on Saturday and Sunday. With snow in the forecast, visitors can expect fresh terrain opening throughout Colorado’s largest ski area, offering another reason to celebrate the season.
