Wilderness navigators and map lovers from all walks will revel in the U.S. Geological Survey’s entry into the digital era.
New digital maps from U.S. Topo are designed to look, feel and perform like the original paper topographic maps the USGS is known for, but with technical advantages designed to better serve the public. Among those services is the free download of the familiar 7.5-minute quadrangle format maps constructed in GeoPDF format from key layers of geographic data — orthoimagery, roads, geographic names, topographic contours and hydrographic features. Maps are built from a nationwide collection of integrated data gathered over more than a century from local, state, federal and other sources, and can be as simple or sophisticated as you need.
The only catch is that you’ll have to wait until 2010 for the maps of Colorado, one of about 15 states scheduled for production in the coming year.
