GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A jury has convicted a woman of first-degree murder in the shooting death of her husband in the couple’s home in Whitewater last year.
Fifty-two-year-old Miriam Helmick was convicted Tuesday in Alan Helmick’s death. She also was charged with attempted murder related to a car fire in Delta on April 30, 2008, and with forgery over allegations that she signed her husband’s checks. Helmick said she had permission to sign them.
She was convicted of all charges except one forgery count.
Her first-degree murder conviction means she will be sentenced to life in prison without parole Wednesday.
Helmick’s attorney had argued that investigators ignored evidence suggesting someone else was involved in the slaying.
