MILLIKEN, Colo.—The lawyer for a man accused of causing a crash that killed his pregnant wife says he is pleading guilty to lesser charges so his kids won’t have to testify at a trial.

Thirty-one-year-old Scott Huggins of Milliken pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to commit child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and careless driving resulting in death. His attorney Todd Taylor says Huggins didn’t want to put his kids on the stand.

Danielle Huggins was two months pregnant when the crash happened Jan. 28. The crash also injured three of the couple’s children. Prosecutors said in March that one child saw Scott Huggins hit his wife’s arms as she drove. His lawyers argued he acted in self-defense.

Huggins is set to be sentenced Jan. 22.
