POP MUSIC

OneRepublic at Olympics

Denver-based multiplatinum pop act OneRepublic will play in Whistler, British Columbia, at the 2010 Winter Olympics “We are beyond excited to play the Olympics this year,” said lead singer Ryan Tedder. The band, touring Europe in support of its “Waking Up” album, will play after an awards ceremony near the ski run area, Tedder said.

And they might not be alone. The Fray might also play during the Feb. 12-28 Vancouver games, Tedder said, although an Epic Records representative couldn’t confirm the Fray’s Olympics plans.

“I’m not sure where the Fray are playing,” Tedder said, “but (the Fray’s) Joe King told me a few weeks ago that they were playing the Olympics too, so we’re gonna have to have a Fray/OneRepublic ski-off followed by peppermint schnapps and reindeer sliders — and maybe some of that Clark Griswold eggnog.” Ricardo Baca

CLASSICAL MUSIC

Renee Fleming, in an intimate venue

Tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. Monday for a Feb. 26 gala concert in the 530-seat Vilar Performing Arts Center in Vail, featuring popular soprano Renee Fleming.

In September 2007, the operatic star made a one-night appearance with the Colorado Symphony before a capacity crowd, and Vilar officials hope some of her Denver fans will make the trek to Vail to see her there.

“Obviously, it’s an incredible opportunity for us to have her here,” said Vilar executive director Kris Sabel. “We want to certainly draw from our region. We know that there are huge fans here, and who gets to see Renee Fleming in a 500-seat theater?”

The singer, who will be in Vail for two days, will perform a light, mixed program combining some of her favorite arias with well- known Broadway and jazz tunes.

Tickets are $150. They are available by calling 888-920-2787 or visiting . Kyle MacMillan

PUBLIC ART

Theatre District is “Alive”

The towering new Spire building downtown is hosting the latest in a free public-art series, and you’re invited. The next installment of the Denver Theatre District’s Art Salon takes place Thursday with Denver artist Bill Amundson, who will speak and watch the unveiling of a new large-scale commissioned work, “It’s Alive.” The piece will adorn the corner of 14th and Arapahoe streets for the next six months via a digital billboard display.

“We have been selecting artists, paired with music, food and drink, and placing them in space around the theatre district,” said co-organizer Michael Schenkelberg, who expects acclaimed Denver musician Ian Cooke to perform at the event. “The idea is to allow people to experience art in a different setting and drive economic traffic to downtown.”

The Denver Theatre District anchors itself around the Denver Performing Arts Complex and works to promote surrounding attractions and businesses. Amundson’s unveiling is the third in the district’s 10-part Art Salon series, which is curated by Plus Gallery owner Ivar Zeile. The free event takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 891 14th St. RSVP to ivar@plusgallery.com or get more information at . John Wenzel
