In a Dec. 8 column by The Denver Post’s Dave Krieger, Regis University basketball coach Lonnie Porter said: “I’ve lost almost 400 games. It takes a real man to take a whupping 400 times and still keep his sanity.”
Sunday night in Gunnison, Porter’s team gave out a whupping of its own, defeating Western State 72-57 in Gunnison.
But it wasn’t just the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory for the Rangers this season.
It was a milestone victory for their coach — the 500th of Porter’s career.
Porter has all his wins at Regis, where he began his head coaching career in 1977.
He became the 10th active coach and the 35th all time to earn 500 career victories in NCAA Division II play.
After three unsuccessful tries at No. 500, Regis (3-3, 1-3) made sure to get this one, jumping out to an 18-5 lead and never trailing.
Porter is now 500-390 for his career.
