DENVER—Colorado’s teacher colleges aren’t doing a great job according to a national education group.
The National Council on Teacher Quality released a report Monday criticizing Colorado’s five undergraduate teaching schools.
The group says that few of the state’s 15 teacher schools fully prepare candidates to teach the science of reading or cover the mathematics that elementary teachers need.
The study by the Washington, D.C.-based group comes amid growing criticism of teacher preparation. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan has said the nation needs to do a better job training educators.
About 2,400 people a year graduate with teaching degrees from Colorado schools.
