A home in Golden was severely damaged this morning when a fire, inside a fireplace, escaped its firebox or chimney and spread into the residence.

Firefighters were called by the homeowner at about 9 a.m. to the 1200 block of Youngsfield Street, according to a media release from the West Metro Fire Protection District.

The fire was put out but not before causing “extensive” damage to the roof and several rooms in the home, which has been deemed “unsafe” by building inspectors, the fire department said.

Six people living in the home have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

No one was injured.

The fire district said homeowners should have their fireplaces cleaned annually to avoid “creosote” build-up in chimneys and stovepipes.

Creosote can cause chimney fires.
