DENVER—Organizers say hundreds of people gathered for a candlelight vigil for 155 homeless people who died in the greater Denver area this year.
The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless says the vigil Wednesday night outside the Denver City and County Building recognized people ages 3 months to 73 years who died from exposure, vehicular accidents, violence and illness due to chronic disease. Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper attended the vigil.
There is no official count of homeless deaths in Colorado, but the coalition compiled its list of names by working with homeless service organizations that represent health care workers, case managers, social workers, housing managers, chaplains, volunteers and others who work with the homeless.
