The cause of a fire in a 14,000 square-foot house outside Fort Collins was the gas log fireplace located in the family room of the residence, the Poudre Valley Fire Authority said today.

The fire, which broke out about 3 p.m. Saturday, at 7114 Douglas Lake Road, was first spotted and reported by an ice fisherman on Douglas Lake.

The caretakers of the large residence, which is under bank ownership, were not at home at the time of the fire.

During the fire, two firefighters were injured. One was hurt by falling debris and treated at the scene. The other was taken to a hospital but was released after a couple of hours.

Firemen were able to contain the fire damage to the wall around the fireplace chimney and attic area. The first floor suffered moderate smoke damage but the basement was not damaged.

Firefighters from the Poudre Valley Fire Authority and the Wellington Fire Protection District fought the fire. Officers from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

The home is currently not habitable.
