SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — Jack Campbell made 22 saves and the United States remained unbeaten at the world junior hockey championships with a 3-0 victory over Switzerland on Sunday.
Chris Kreider, Matt Donovan and A.J. Jenks scored for the Americans (2-0), who opened the tournament with an equally impressive 7-3 win over Slovakia on Saturday.
Benjamin Conz made 46 saves for Switzerland (0-1).
Kreider, a Boston College product and New York Rangers draft pick, was the only player to beat Conz in the first 40 minutes. He deflected in Cam Fowler‘s point shot on a power play at 5:51 of the second period.
Conz was sensational from that point on — the Americans fired 38 shots on goal over the final two periods. But the Swiss couldn’t convert their chances, and Donovan gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead with seven minutes left. Jenks put the game out of reach four minutes later.
In the second Group A game in Saskatoon, Slovakia beat Latvia 8-3. In Group B in Regina, Saskatch- ewan, Oliver Ekman Larsson and Anton Rodin each had two goals and an assist to help Sweden beat Austria 7-3. Also, Finland overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Czech Republic 4-3.
Asada earns Olympic berth
OSAKA, Japan — Mao Asada won the Japanese women’s national figure skating championships to secure a place on the Vancouver Olympic team.
Asada, first after the short program, began the free skate with a triple axel and was solid the rest of the way to finish with 204.62 points for her fourth straight national title.
Akiko Suzuki also booked a trip to Vancouver after finishing second with 195.90 points, 0.17 points ahead of Yukari Nakano.
Asada will make her Olympic debut four years after she was left out of the Turin Games because of the age limit despite impressive results in senior events, including a victory at the 2005 Grand Prix finals.
Two earn spots on U.S. team
KEARNS, Utah — Nancy Swider- Peltz Jr. won the women’s 3,000 meters at the U.S. Speedskating Championships, clinching a spot on the Olympic team.
Trevor Marsicano clinched a berth on the American roster by winning the 5,000 meters.
Austrian tops in training run
BORMIO, Italy — Michael Walchhofer led the opening training session for Tuesday’s men’s World Cup downhill.
The Austrian finished in 2 minutes, 3.25 seconds. Andrej Jerman of Slovenia was second, 0.16 seconds behind, and Christoph Gruber of Austria was third, 0.71 back.
Downhill World Cup leader Didier Cuche of Switzerland was sixth.
New Zealand boat is out front
HOBART, Australia — New Zealand’s Alfa Romeo extended its lead in the Sydney to Hobart sailing race today.
Alfa Romeo, skippered by Neville Crichton and taking advantage of an early breeze that his competitors failed to catch, led by 20 nautical miles over defending champion Wild Oats XI of Australia.
