Only one southbound lane of Colorado Boulevard at Smith Road will be open today and through the evening commute as crews from Denver Water work to repair a water main.
The 16-inch pipe was installed in 1951, Denver Water said in a release. It is unknown what caused the break, but repairs are expected to be finished by tomorrow evening.
Until then, southbound drivers are diverted to a northbound lane, creating congestion for drivers in both directions. The exit to Colorado from eastbound Interstate 70 is closed.
Denver Water said the repairs are taking longer than expected because part of the water main has to be taken out of service.
