Denver police say the driver who crashed into a gas line Monday morning will be ticketed for careless driving.

Two area buildings were evacuated after the accident, and a firefighter who inhaled fumes was treated and released.

Authorities say a car went off the road and hit an apartment building at 289 Quebec St. shortly before 2 a.m. A 2-inch high pressure gas line broke in the process, forcing the evacuation of five residents in the apartment complex.

While Xcel Energy crews responded quickly, it took a while to get workers with natural gas experience on the scene. The gas line was capped shortly after 4 a.m. Quebec was closed from 2nd Avenue to 6th Avenue overnight, but reopened around 5:30 a.m. Residents up to a mile away could smell a strong odor.

The driver was able to walk away from the crash on his own. His name was not released.
