A former Denver Public Schools social worker received the maximum prison sentence today after his guilty plea to kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old boy in 1989 and again in 1990.

Eugene Summers, 50, who had worked at East High School and other local schools, was sentenced to 16 years in prison and taken from the courtroom in handcuffs to begin his prison sentence, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

Denver District Court Judge Brian Whitney told Summers he “was an opportunist who utilized his position as a social worker to have the time and security of picking targets.” according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Summers allegedly locked the boy in a room during the attacks. He previously was charged with repeatedly sexually assaulting another boy over a four-year period, but the case was dismissed in 2007 because a court ruled the statute of limitations had expired.

In that case, he was accused of molesting a student who attended the same elementary school and later the middle school where Summers worked.

Summers had worked at several Denver schools. His job description included spotting child abuse.
