The first-ever Warrior Games for wounded and disabled servicemen and women will be held in Colorado Springs from May 10-14, the Department of Defense and the U.S. Olympic Committee announced Thursday.
The goal of the games is to inspire recovery and capitalize on physical fitness for the nation’s wounded warriors. The events will be shooting, swimming, archery, sitting volleyball, cycling, track, wheelchair basketball, discus and shot put, plus an “Ultimate Warrior” pentathlon-style competition.
Wyoming freshman Gary honored.
The Football Writers Association of America named University of Wyoming freshman strong safety Shamiel Gary to its freshman All-America first team. Gary, of Tulsa, Okla., recorded 98 tackles, which ranked eighth in the Mountain West Conference, and intercepted three passes.
Bouknight named receivers coach.
Former Wyoming wide receiver Jovon Bouknight was promoted from graduate assistant to wide receivers coach at Utah State. Bouknight played quarterback at Manual High School before switching to wideout at Wyoming, where he still ranks No. 2 in career receptions and No. 3 in receiving yards. Bouknight went to camp with two NFL teams and played in NFL Europe before returning to Laramie as a graduate assistant for one season before heading to Utah State.
Skyhawks looking for football coach.
Fort Lewis College football coach Ed Rifilato resigned to become defensive coordinator at fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference school New Mexico Highlands.
Rifilato led the Skyhawks to a 22-41 record in his six seasons with a conference record of 18-32 and two RMAC coach of the year honors. Fort Lewis won only two games the past two seasons. Rifilato was the head coach at Highlands before moving to Fort Lewis.
