COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Springs Police Department says a temperature controller on a refrigerator holding its DNA evidence malfunctioned.

Department spokesman Lt. David Whitlock says police experts believe the evidence is still usable.

After the problem was discovered Dec. 7, the 235 samples of blood, semen, urine and other evidence in the refrigerator were moved to a different refrigerator.

Prosecutors are notifying defense attorneys about the malfunction.

Police have had missteps with evidence before. In 2006, former Police Chief Luis Velez said thousands of pieces of evidence had been mistakenly destroyed. He retired months later.
