DENVER—District Attorney Mark Hurlburt, who filed sexual assault charges against basketball star Kobe Bryant, is running for the Colorado Senate.

Republican Party chairman Dick Wadhams says Hurlburt is expected to make a formal announcement on Thursday.

Bryant was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a Vail-area resort in 2003. Bryant denied the allegation and the case was dismissed after the accuser said she did not want to participate in a trial.

Hurlburt is running as a Republican to fill a seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Dan Gibbs, who decided to run for county commissioner.
