An irreverent thief, or thieves, swiped a large wood- and-bronze crucifix from the wall of a hospice chapel in Lakewood.

The theft happened between 8 and 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hospice of St. John, 1320 Everett Court, according to a news release from the Lakewood Police Department.

The religious work, by artist Lynn Kircher and valued at $12,000, is titled “Transcendent Christ.” It was purchased by the hospice in 2007.

The work consists of a wooden cross measuring about 3 feet, 6 inches high and 2 feet wide, and a bronze sculpture of Jesus measuring about 2 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing about 75 pounds, police said.

Anyone with information about the theft or the crucifix’s whereabouts is asked to call police at 303-987-7111. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
