COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The El Paso County Commissioners have taken a step toward getting rid of about 30 million used tires at a dump south of Colorado Springs.
Commissioners this week approved a memorandum of understanding with Colorado Energy Recyclers to clean up tire dump.
Colorado Energy Recyclers plans to shred the tires to be burned for fuel in the kilns of GCC Cement Co. in Pueblo.
State officials must approve the plan. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has encouraged the proposal.
Officials say the tires now pose a fire threat.
GCC Production Manager Gina Nance says the company would mix the shredded tires with coal. Nance says it will take about 10 years to burn all the tires.
