Denver Post staff writers Neil H. Devlin and Jon E. Yunt look at upcoming events in high school sports:
BOYS BASKETBALL
It’s a big week in the Class 3A Metropolitan League for Kent Denver.
The Sun Devils play at Denver Christian today at 7 p.m. and host undefeated Faith Christian on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Cherry Hills Village.
Kent Denver and Denver Christian are one game off the Eagles’ pace.
In Class 5A, key Jefferson County League action will pit neighboring Chatfield at Dakota Ridge on Friday at 7 p.m. One of the big ones in the Colorado Springs Metro, Palmer at Rampart, is Saturday at 7 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
You have to see these
A veritable plethora of high-enders will be played today and Friday as league games generate must-see matchups.
Take your pick.
In Class 4A Jeffco today at 7 p.m., watch Conifer at Centaurus. On Friday, choose in 5A between Mullen at Cherry Creek in the Centennial, ThunderRidge at Chaparral in the Continental or Monarch at Legacy in the Front Range.
WRESTLING
Top of the Rockies
After the holiday break and before the regional tournaments get underway, the one meet that always stands out is Centaurus’ Top of the Rockies.
A regular who’s who of the state’s best — from Ponderosa and looming four-timer Jacob Snider to reigning Class 4A team champion Broomfield — will headline the action Friday and Saturday.
Teams from Wyoming, Texas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Kansas also make up the 32-team field.
But not on hand is Class 5A’s top- ranked team: Coronado. The Cougars will compete in the 10th annual Colorado Springs Metro Championships at Doherty.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Harvard-bound talent
Jenna Gregoire has flown under the radar at Rampart the past three seasons. But the reigning 100-yard freestyle champion is a force to be reckoned with — in and out of the pool. Her 4.8 grade-point average and her performances in the pool have landed her next season at Harvard. This weekend, the Rams host their own invitational.
ICE HOCKEY
Ski traffic? It’s more like hockey traffic
With prep parity running amok, Saturday’s schedule of games is intriguing, to say the least.
Start with the two-time defending champions from Regis Jesuit (9-3) traveling to Breckenridge and Stephen C. West Arena to take on Summit’s Tigers (6-1-1).
Bishop Machebeuf (8-4) and Lewis-Palmer (5-1-3) also are headed to the talent-rich hills.
Al Quintana’s Buffs will be in Aspen to take on the Skiers, and the Rangers of Lewis-Palmer will be in Vail to take on Battle Mountain.
