ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Raiders finally made a coaching decision, bringing Mike Waufle back as defensive line coach Friday.
The move comes as head coach Tom Cable’s status remains in limbo nearly three weeks after the end of the regular season.
Waufle was an assistant in Oakland from 1998-2003, helping the Raiders go to the Super Bowl following the 2002 season. He spent the past six seasons with the Giants. He coached the defensive line that was key to New York’s Super Bowl victory over New England two years ago. Waufle was fired this month.
While owner Al Davis has not decided whether to bring Cable back next season, the news release announcing Waufle’s hiring highlighted his relationship with Cable.
“He and Coach Cable spent six years together at the University of California where they enjoyed working together,” the release said.
Cable has been talking with Davis about his job since the season ended Jan. 3. Cable went 5-11 in his first full season as Raiders coach. He is 9-19 since replacing Lane Kiffin early in the 2008 season, leading the Raiders to their NFL-worst seventh straight season with at least 11 losses.
Suit against Suggs dropped
BALTIMORE — An attorney for Terrell Suggs said the mother of the Ravens linebacker’s two children has withdrawn a $70 million lawsuit against him, and the two are trying to reconcile.
Lynn Hoffman, who represents Suggs, said Candace Williams voluntarily withdrew the lawsuit and filed a motion to rescind a protective order she had taken out against him last month.
Williams had accused Suggs of striking her on two occasions, breaking her nose the first time and spilling bleach on her during the second altercation.
