After nearly six hours of testimony and debate, the Senate Finance Committee voted 5-2 Tuesday night to pass a bill designed to rescue the state’s ailing pension fund.
Lawmakers warned that everyone would share in the pain, starting with freezing a cost-of-living increase.
“Frankly, we should go further than we have,” said Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction.
Together with Senate President Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, he helped broker a deal to rescue the the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association, facing almost $27.5 billion in unfunded liabilities.
