A scam involving a fraudulent collection agency’s demand for immediate payment of $293.11 has prompted a warning from state officials.
Attorney General John Suthers said today in a news release that Colorado consumers should be aware of e-mails from a company calling itself IAC Recovery Systems, Ltd., telling recipients they owe $293.11 to an unnamed creditor.
Suthers has received more than three dozen consumer complaints about IAC. Investigators say the e-mails direct the consumers to visit a Web site to pay the money owed with a credit card.
The e-mails also list a fake Denver address for the collection agency – 17165 Platte St., Suite 110, Denver 80202 – and a fax number, 303-756-3400.
The fax number is, in fact, the phone number for a Glendale eatery, said investigators.
Suthers said that IAC Recovery Ltd., is not a registered collection agency and in not in compliance with the Colorado Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
People who have been approached by IAC or any other collection agency trying to collect a fraudulent claim should file a report with the Colorado Collection Agency Board in the AG’s office or cab@state.co.us.
