Gannett

The largest U.S. newspaper publisher said Monday it turned a profit in the fourth quarter, helped by a drop in one-time costs and a smaller decline in ad sales.

Gannett, owner of Denver television station KUSA-Channel 9 and the Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper, earned $133.6 million, or 56 cents per share, compared with a loss of $4.7 billion, or $20.65 per share, in the same quarter of 2008, when it booked charges to account for the falling value of its newspapers.

Anadarko Petroleum

Fourth-quarter profit fell because of lower oil and gas prices and diminished demand.

But The Woodlands, Texas, exploration and production company said Monday its full-year sales volume rose 7 percent, despite a 35 percent drop in spending on near-term projects. Anadarko’s fourth-quarter net income totaled $229 million, or 46 cents a share, including one-time gains that added $208 million, or 42 cents per share.

Humana

Fourth-quarter profit rose as expenses related to prescription-drug plans declined.

Humana earned $250.7 million, or $1.48 per share, for the period ended Dec. 31. The results were 44 percent higher than the company’s profit of $174.1 million, or $1.03 per share, a year earlier.
